The capital city of the Northwest Territories is situated on Great Slave Lake near the Arctic Circle and the stunningly colorful Aurora Borealis can sometimes be viewed in the sky over the community. Yellowknife was settled in the late 1930s by prospectors looking for gold, though the First Nations people have lived there for many years. The city is named for copper knives that the Chipewyan tribe utilized in the 19th Century. Notable attractions are The Prince of Wales Northern Heritage Centre, Bush Pilots Monument, The Gold Range Bar and the Northern Frontier Visitors Centre.
