Established in 1967 as the second national park in Iceland, Skaftafell is roughly 500 square km large and covers the southeast corner of Iceland, included the Votnajokull glacier. Today it has been incorporated as part of the Vatnajokull National Park. No roads lead into the park, but it is easily accessible from trails along the 1 highway, which circles the island country. Those who hike this fantastic natural park will find the Svartifoss falls, the Vatna Glacier, the river Skeiðará, and the Sjónarnípa waterfall.
