About Rialto Bridge

The beautifully-decorated stone pedestrian bridge spanning the Grand Canal in Venice was built between 1588-1591 and designed by Antonio da Ponte. It was the only bridge to cross the canal until 1854 when the Accademia Bridge was constructed. The stone reliefs on the bridge depict the city's patron saints St. Mark and St. Theodore and the Annuciation. Rialto Bridge separates Venice's San Polo and San Marco districts.
