This imposing Neoclassical national monument in the Plaza de la Independencia is one of Madrid’s best known landmarks and was once the main entrance to the city. Puerta de Alcala, completed in 1769, consists of a large central semicircular arch flanked by two similar arches, which in turn are flanked by two smaller gates. It is topped with ornamental statues representing the four cardinal virtues: Prudence, Justice, Temperance and Fortitude.
