About Prague Jewish Town (Josefov)

Formerly Prague's Jewish Ghetto, this city quarter contains many landmarks including the oldest synagogue in Europe - the Old-New Synagogue. The Jewish community was established in the 13th century and received its current name of Josefov in 1850 after Emperor Joseph II who issued the Toleration Edict in 1781 allowing religious freedom. Other notable sites include Old Jewish Cemetery, High Synagogue, Jewish Town Hall, Pinkas Synagogue, Spanish Synagogue and Franz Kafka's birthplace.
