The unique Virginia natural landmark was part of 157 acres bought by Thomas Jefferson in 1774 and the U.S. president called it "the most sublime of nature's works." Natural Bridge is now a state park and the former Rockbridge County town is named after the geological feature. It was created when a cannon collapsed and has been designated a U.S. National Historic Landmark. A Monacan Native American legend said Natural Bridge came into existence when the natives were running from an enemy.
