The popular recreation area rising 2,890 feet used to be the site of Murphy Dome Air Force Station from 1951-83 and is a prime location to watch Aurora Borealis/Northern Lights as well as sunsets. Murphy Dome is located approximately 20 miles from Fairbanks and still consists of one working building in a Long Range Radar Station to identify any military air hazards. That station is run by the United States Air Force 611th Air Support Group out of Elmendorf Air Force Base in Anchorage.
