This active 8,363-foot stratovolcano located in the Cascade Mountains in Washington state last erupted in 1980 causing a major catastrophe and is part of the Pacific Ring of Fire. Mount St. Helens was named after Alleyne FitzHerbert, 1st Baron St. Helens - a good friend of explorer George Vancouver, who first recorded seeing the volcano in 1792 aboard the HMS Discovery. It was formed approximately 275,000 years ago, according to the U.S. Geological Survey.
