Considered the most sacred peak of all by the native Hawaiians, this dormant volcano looms over the island of Hawaii. Packed with indigenous flora and fauna, such as the endangered mamane–naio forest, Mauna Kea also draws visitors for its excellent stargazing and is world-renowned for astronomical observation. Ambitious hikers can try the Humu'ula–Mauna Kea Summit Trail, which takes an entire day to climb. Mauna Kea is the highest peak on the Hawaiian Islands.
