The coastal fortress of Lovrijenac was built just outside Dubrovnik's western wall, guarding the two entrances to the seat. Due to its strategic location the fortress helped defend the city from invasion by the Venetians multiple times. Originally, in the 11th century the Venetians attempted to build a fort on the exact spot as Lovrijenac, which would've been instrumental in their capture of the city, but the people of Dubrovnik built one first, successfully stopping future invasions.
