See Morocco’s first Mellah, the name given to all of the country’s Jewish neighborhoods, which was built in 1276 for Jewish Syrian archers who were in the army of the ruling dynasty of the time. The Jewish Quarter in Fez is markedly different architecturally than its Muslim and Berber counterparts, with ancient houses featuring open balconies that look out on the streets. The Mellah is also home to a number of outstanding antique furniture shops.
