The uniquely beautiful main church of the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of San Francisco is located in the city's Cathedral Hill neighborhood and took the place of the 1854 religious structure now known as Old Saint Mary's Church. Cathedral of Saint Mary of the Assumption, often shorted to Saint Mary's Cathedral, was designed by a team of local and international architects and blessed in 1971. Pope John Paul II presided over mass in the cathedral in 1987.
