This historic town located on the north shore of Belfast Lough is County Antrim’s oldest as well as one of the oldest settlements in Northern Ireland. Carrickfergus, better known as just “Carrick,” is guarded by the most impressive medieval fortress in Northern Ireland. The castle, located at the entrance to Belfast Lough, is where William of Orange landed on June 1690 en route to the Battle of the Boyne. Another must-see site is a replica of the ancestral home of the 7th U.S. president, Andrew Jackson, whose parents were from Carrickfergus.
