This French memorial and peace museum located in Caen, Normandy observes World War II and its Battle of Caen. The Caen-Normandy Memorial Centre for History and Peace was opened on June 6, 1988 on the 44th anniversary of D-Day and was founded by Caen mayor Jean-Marie Girault, who served with the French Red Cross during the war. It features the actual underground bunker that was headquarters of German Gen. Wilhelm Richter during World War II in addition to many historical relics. The center also has memorial gardens dedicated to the United States, Britain and Canada; a Nobel Peace Prize gallery and Cold War exhibits.
