See the neoclassical triumphal arch that is Berlin's most symbolic landmark. The Brandenburg Gate was a symbol of division during the Cold War and is now the epitome of German reunification. It was modeled after the Acropolis in Athens and is crowned by the famous Quadriga sculpture, a four-horse copper chariot drawn by the goddess Victoria. When the Berlin Wall came down in 1989, hundreds of thousands of East Germans walked freely through the Brandenburg Gate into West Berlin for the first time since 1961.
