About Belem Tower

Located in the revered parish of Belem, this UNESCO World Heritage monument is dedicated to Portugal’s Age of Discovery, and often serves as a symbol of the country. Belem Tower was originally built in 1515 as a fortress guarding the entrance to Lisbon harbor, and was the launching point for many of the voyages of discovery. It is an eclectic mix of stonework motifs of the Discoveries, sculptures depicting historical figures, Moorish-style watchtowers, Venetian-style loggias and a statue of Our Lady of Safe Homecoming, a symbol of protection for sailors on their voyages.
