About Ballestas Islands

Accessible only by boat, the memorable Ballestas Islands feature a ton of wildlife, including herds of boisterous sea lions whose cries echo around the rock formations. A typical two-hour tour will take you past the mysterious El Candelabro, an enormous geoglyph carved into the sandy hills that may have been used by mariners for navigation in ages past. Colonies made up of thousands of seabirds, including Guanay cormorant, the blue-footed booby and the Peruvian pelican, nest on the islands and fill the skies above. Just don't forget to wear a hat to protect yourself against seabird droppings, or guano!
