Arenal Volcano is located in north-western Costa Rica around 90 km northwest of San José. The volcano has been considered active since it erupted unexpectedly in 1968, destroying the small town of Tabacón. Visitors, however, will be unable to see lava or plumes of ash because the volcano is now “sleeping”, and explosions have been rare since October of 2010. The conical Arenal volcano is at least 5,358 feet (1,633 m) high with a crater spanning 460 feet (140 m). The area around the volcano offers rainforest hikes, whitewater rafting, and horseback riding.
