This former high-maximum security federal penitentiary is located on Alcatraz Island in the San Francisco Bay 1.25 miles off the coast. Famously known for housing some of the nation's most notorious criminals, Alcatraz was in operation from 1933-1963 and is frequently called "The Rock."
